Description
ONS was set up in 1996 as an independent government department and an executive agency to provide both statistical and registration services. Progress in the first three years included being the first country in the EU to convert to the new system of national accounts (ESA 95) with a full set of back series. In 1999 the ONS reinstated the Average Earning Index (AEI) which had been suspended in 1998.
