This assessment examines the hazards, risks and control measures relating to incidents attended by the fire and rescue services involving aircraft. The term aircraft is used to describe all types of flying machines. The significant hazards and risks are identified: aircraft construction materials; damaged structures; aircraft engines; fuels; pressurised systems; electrical systems; fluoroelastomers; confined working conditions; recovery systems; airbags; payload, biological; blood born pathogens; equipment in use; psychological trauma; limited experience. Further hazards specific to military aircraft and helicopters are also detailed. Key control measures for these incidents are described.
