This concise textbook of vascular surgery focuses on the clinical assessment, diagnosis and treatment of the common vascular surgical disorders commonly seen in clinical practice. The different management options are assessed in the light of up-to-date knowledge of current clinical practiceand information from the research literature. The authors are all teaching hospital consultants in vascular surgery who have an active interest in vascular surgical training and research. As living conditions improve, people throughout the world are surviving longer and vascular disorders become more common as age increases. Many of these disorders can now be treated successfully by surgery, which results in improvement not only the duration, but also the quality of lief in theseolder age groups. The introductory chapters concentrate on the clinical assessment and investigation of the vascular patient and is followed by a surgeon's eye view of the role of interventional vascular radiology in current vascular practice. The vascular surgeon is often called upon to insert prosthetic materialand a general discussion of the use of vascular protheses is included. There are individual chapters on the commonly encountered vascular conditions, particularly carotid stenosis, aortic aneurysm and peripheral vascular disease. The management of vascular trauma, visceral vessel disease, venousdisease and lymphoedema are also discussed. The book aims to equip the reader with the basic knowledge required to manage the majority of clinical vascular problems. The reader should also be equipped to enter sensible discussion on the management of commonly encountered vascular surgical conditionsin the exam setting. The book is highly illustrated with photographs and diagrams, many in colour, emphasizing the very practical nature of the approach.The book will be of value to trainee surgeons preparing for MRCS, FRCS or equivalent level examinations, as well as those seeking useful background reading about the common vascular conditions and treatments encountered on the vascular wards and in the outpatient clinics.
