This study of sin and evil grew out of my personal experiences as much as my academic concerns. I am of course not alone in being a witness to much evil in the past forty years. Indeed, it is a peculiarly complacent soul who has not marveled at and shrunk from the horrors of war, racism, poverty, and moral defection in the twentieth century. In my own case, however, the evils raised a gnawing question: how is man's inhumanity to man a part of humanity itself? -- Preface.
