Media studies thrives on debate and criticism, and is itself the object of dismissive and frequently ill-informed comment. This is an introduction to key media studies issues, exploring their strengths and weaknesses, mapping the main areas of the subject as it is presently constituted, and seeking to establish paths through which the subject may develop into the 21st century. It has a dual purpose: to offer a provocative introduction to the subject for students and to shape and further this popular but controversial field of study.
