This companion volume to Gardner's On Becoming a Novelist explains with examples, the principles and techniques of good writing that Gardner not only employed in his own fiction but also promulgated at universities and writers' workshops. The book begins with suggestions, assertions and advice to guide beginning writer toward an understanding of what fiction is and how best to write it. He addresses the issue of literary aesthetics and argues in favor of formal education for writers. In the second part, he anatomizes the process of writing fiction and identifies the common errors the novice makes: over-abstraction, insufficient detail, sentimentality, mannerism and various kinds of "clumsy" writing. He also deals with the seven basic technical matters that the beginning writer must bear in mind: imitation, control of vocabulary, sentence construction, point of view, delay, rhythm, and style.
