Description
People in search of a general account of the history of the region will find this book attractive and readable. Professor Omer-Cooper has updated the second edition to incorporate recent advances in scholarship. The most substantial changes focus on: the early history, settlement and relationships of the Khoisan and Bantu-speaking peoples; the causation and course of the nineteenth-century Mfecane, which was originally detailed in the author's book The Zulu Aftermath; the recent history of Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland and newly independent Namibia; the final phase of apartheid from 1986 to 2 February 1990; the negotiations to establish a transitional regime, to hold all-race elections for a constituent assembly with authority to establish a new constitution. This has proved to be the most teachable history of the region available. It has worked in classes in places as far apart as Norway, Australia, Britain and the United States as well as in South Africa itself.
