"This study examines the psychological and spiritual dynamics of Roman Catholic clergy sex offenders. While there are hundreds of studies that have examined the experiences of those abused by Roman Catholic clergy, few have focused on the dynamics and complexities of the perpetrators. More specifically, this study explores the spiritual aspect of this dynamic—one whereby clergy abusers exploit their role as institutionally sanctioned custodians in order to access their victims. By conducting an integrative literature review, a critical exploration, and evaluation of the topic, it is my hope that this research may illuminate several areas related to an individual’s spiritual life as it relates to his role as clergy perpetrator and the institution of the Church, which form the makeup of these individuals. In addition, this dissertation attempts to point to directions that will contribute to explanatory theory and inform further research and treatment approaches." -- abstract.
