"This dissertation includes all required components for a qualitative inquiry exploring high school students’ long-term social emotional learning (SEL) linked to participating in a theater production about social awareness. This research examines long-term learning for students who participated in The Laramie Project (Kaufman & Tectonic Theater Project, 2001) in 2003 and 2004. Their learning was analyzed using an SEL-based lens. SEL is currently a leading topic of research in public education, though little focuses on high school students and none has been found at this time regarding high school theater programs. Working with teens in theater has provided me a chance to witness transformational opportunities in confidence, work ethic, self-value and more. This inquiry supports the work many theater teachers do and also provides important information of the learning that results from participating in theater for social awareness. A review of current literature about SEL, an explanation of the methodology for the study and the study outcomes provide a foundation for intentional script selection to affect adolescent development of SEL." -- abstract.
