Description

The Nine Muses of Greek Mythology: Their Place and Purpose In Our Lives Today is an exploration of the practical value of mythic wisdom in contemporary American culture. the Nine Muses are the mythic mentors who inform this work. the Muses are remembered as goddesses of inspiration who presided over the arts and sciences and ancient academies of learning. A primary contribution made by this research is to demonstrate the connection between the Muses' gift to humanity, a liberal education, and the requirements of being a good citizen in a democratic environment. While some literature addresses the liberal arts as the education for a democracy, there is no in-depth work that reveals the place and the purpose of the Muses in that discussion. the social relevance of this work is emphasized as the Muses speak to current social and cultural concerns. the Muses are traditionally known through inspired speech and action while their own identities remain elusive. While each of the Nine Muses speaks to the educational requirements for a democracy in this work, the Muses' individual identities do remain elusive. By addressing current social concerns, the Muses allow this work to fulfill its promise of portraying mythic wisdom as, of all things, practical. This Project Demonstrating Excellence is presented as a manuscript titled the Liberal Art of Life: A Guide to Spiritual Literacy In Twenty-First Century America. It contains a preface, introductory chapter, and a discourse by each of the Nine Muses on her respective subject area or department of life. the manuscript is followed by a contextual essay which includes a scholarly literature review, a discussion on research methodology, and extensive endnotes.
