Twelve-year-old Isabel decides that this summer she's not just going to lie around the Oakland public pool with her cousins -- she's going to start a business. Before long, she's doing yard work for a woman who lives in a fancy neighborhood near Oakland. At first it's okay; the pay is great, after all. But soon the woman's son, Charles, and his friend Sam begin making fun of Isabel -- her Mexican background, her name, even her family. Even worse, they decide to hunt a cougar supposedly living in the canyons nearby. Soon the whole neighborhood is in an uproar, demanding the cougar's death. Isabel knows she can defend herself from Charles and Sam, but she's not so sure about the cougar.Should Isabel try to save this wild creature? Or will protecting the mountain lion put her own life on the line?
