Results of a study funded by the Criminology Research Council. Presents a review of the sentencing laws for minor offences which do not require court proceedings such as on-the-spot fines, parking tickets, littering notices and other forms of infringement or penalty notices. Examines the legal and criminological aspects of this feature of the criminal justice system and the broader implications of the surveillance techniques used. Focuses on the Victorian jurisdiction but the issues are relevant to all Australian jurisdictions with interstate, federal and overseas jurisdictions briefly reviewed. Includes a table of contents, table of legislation and cases and a subject index. The author is a professor of law at Monash University and has written extensively on criminal procedure and sentencing in Australia.
