Lizzie Fordham, a former convict, wants nothing more than to be on the other side of the world, back in England, a land she barely remembers. Her husband George knows this all too well. He buys a map from Balthazar, a tinker, thinking that if he's able to find gold, he'll be able to give Lizzie what she wants. George vanishes with the map. Three months later, he still hasn't returned. A letter arrives, telling of the death of George's brother and his wife. George's 11 year old orphaned niece Amelia will be arriving in Hobart and it is expected that she will be taken in. Together, Lizzie and Amelia must traverse Australia in the midst of a gold rush as they search for George. George may or may not want to be found.
