This family history covers 444 years of Norwegian ancestors from the year 1570, which was the estimated year of birth for Niels Enersen, the name of the earliest ancestor who can be identified from official records. The most recent addition to the family tree is represented by the 14th generation from Niels and is currently a female child of a branch that lives in Austria. The account unfolds at the island municipality of Hvaler in the southeast of Norway where the ancestors of the Jacobsen and Christiansen families lived. They derived a living from the resources of the land and the sea on a self-sufficient and sustainable basis for over 300 years. However, the combination of population pressure and the opportunities created by the burgeoning Norwegian seafaring industry before the turn of the 20th century encouraged young men to venture onto the seven seas. Many of these men returned to their homeland but some sought lives in other lands. The circumstances of these journeys and the lives led by those who returned or remained to work the land and fish the waters of the outer Oslofjord in the Skagerrak are documented for current and future generations.
