Description

This volume is Canada's second national state of the environment (SOE) report. Part I (Chapter 1) deals with perceptions of the environment and the dangers inherent in our tendency to look at the world in terms of human economic models. Part II (Chapters 2-14) explores the state of particular environmental components (air, water, land, and wildlife) and examines the major sectors of human activity (e.g. fisheries, agriculture, forestry, mining) that exploit or influence them. Part III (Chapters 15-20) is made up of six regional case studies. Collectively, these reflect to some extent the range of environmental problems across the country. Part IV (Chapters 21-26) addresses six important environmental issues that are of particular concern to Canadians today, ranging from toxic chemicals to stresses on wildlife habitat. Finally, Part V (Chapter 27) discusses the concept of sustainable development and some of its implications for Canada's future.
