Description

Lead sinkers & jigs lost by recreational anglers are known to have deleterious effects on waterbirds & fish-eating wildlife when these lead objects are ingested. This report updates scientific information in an earlier report (Scheuhammer & Norris, 1995) on the environmental impacts of lead ammunition & fishing weights. Chapters cover the following: the number, distribution, & activity of recreational anglers in Canada & the United States; estimates of the magnitude of lead sinker & jig use; environmental lead deposition from the loss of lead sinkers & jigs; lead sinker ingestion & poisoning in wildlife, with information on reported incidences related to various species; effects of lead sinker poisoning on loons at the population level; and initiatives undertaken by Canada & other countries to manage the issue of lead sinker ingestion & poisoning in wild birds.
