Since the 1940s, American automobile manufacturers have built concept cars to showcase futuristic styles, new engine technologies, and advanced amenities. This retrospective examines the designs and engineering behind the most influential and memorable concepts to come out of Detroit from the end of World War II to the present, as well as the designers who made them possible. All "Big Three" carmakers are represented, as are those automakers that came and went, including AMC, Packard, Studebaker, Nash, and Crosley. Examples featured include: the 1951 Buick XP-300; 1953's Buick Wildcat and Oldsmobile Starfire; the 1954 Ghia-built Dodge Firearrow; the Chrysler Norseman which sunk with the Andrea Doria in 1956; the 1963 and 1977 Chrysler Turbines; AMC's AMX/2 and AMX/3; Ford's Mustang II and Cougar II; the 1995 Chrysler Atlantic; and many others. Also featured are those concept cars which in recent years have gone directly into production virtually unchanged, including the Dodge Viper and Neon, and both Plymouth's Prowler and PT Cruiser.
