Description
At age 28, Emily Carr went to England to attend art school. She spent almost five years there, from 1899 to 1904, and during this time her life completely changed. In Emily Carr in England, historian Kathryn Bridge reveals new evidence that fills in many of the gaps in this important phase of Carr's life, illuminating her findings with Carr's sketches and paintings, some never before published. This book also contains three of Carr's "funny books," created while she was in England: "London Student Sojourn" pokes fun at life in a boarding house; "The Olsen Student" presents a series of comical drawings alongside a lengthening poem; and "Kendal & I in London" is a series of sketches and verse recalling the day Carr and her friend, Hannah Kendall, tried in vain to watch the funeral procession of Queen Victoria.
