Description

This guide establishes statewide networking standards and addresses key issues regarding network implementation. It is designed to be a framework for construction of access to the global electronic highway for all California public schools. An in-depth view of the major areas that must be considered when schools are developing their technology plans is provided. Part 1 provides background on the state's educational networking efforts. Part 2, "Making the Case," outlines many of the immediate benefits of networking and provides examples of ways to achieve maximum return on investment in network technology. Part 3, "The Technical Plan," presents detailed design parameters and planning guidelines. Part 4 addresses "Training the Staff," with approaches to staff development and suggested resources to help in implementing training programs. Six appendices are included to improve the reader's understanding of network planning that focus on progress reports, selecting connections, internet access, resources and policies, and future technology. Each chapter is labeled with an indicator of its technical difficulty. Eighteen figures and three tables illustrate the discussion. (Contains 29 references.) (SLD)
