Description

This book is a social history of both civil rights and white resistance movements in Sunflower County, Mississippi, a rural, black-majority county in the middle of the Mississippi Delta. Moye traces the development of separate racial communities and examines their organizing strategies in a single locality over four decades. An ideal location for this kind of study, Sunflower county was home to the powerful reactionary Senator James Eastland; the birthplace of the Citizens' Council anti-civil rights movement; the home of Fannie Lou Hamer, the sharecropper who rose to national prominence as head of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party; and the center of an active SNCC chapter.
