Previously known as the Annual Review of Materials Science; the new title reflects the interdisciplinary approach now common to the field. The theme of this volume is biomaterials, to which Stupp (Northwestern U.) provides an introduction. Individual articles are devoted to non-viral gene delivery, biological response to materials, photoinitiated polymerization of biomaterials, phospholid strategies in biomineralization and biomaterials research, synthesis and design of superhard materials, the Staebler- Wronski effect in Si:H, thin film synthesis by energetic condensation, and epitaxial spinel ferrite thin films, among others.
