Description
Winter's fictional landscape--whether it's the Arizona desert or snowy New England--is peopled with renegades and drifters. Sometimes itchy feet make them go, other times an aching heart, but there's an inevitability to their journeys and to the connections they forge along the way. Like the dog, Joseph, in the last story, Winter's characters find themselves "lighting out over dry dirt in hope of finding a familiar scent."
In the title story, a woman on the run from her husband hitches a ride with a man running from the law. As they make their way across the desert in his beat-up Ford Falcon, what they will together become is shaped by what each chooses to hide and reveal. In "Pretty Please," a man obsessed with a mysterious seamstress finds that with stunning dexterity she's able to fashion him to suit her needs. In "A Color of Sky," when a native American single mother begins drug-running for the Fat Man and involves her son in the enterprise, she loses the only thing she ever really wanted to keep.
