Description
The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics'"Curriculum and Evaluation Standards" envision an interdisciplinary approach to mathematics that allows children to communicate their ideas in the process of solving real problems. This book promotes the connection between mathematics and children's literature as part of realizing that vision. An introduction provides the rationale for this connection and describes the organization of the eight chapters of the book, the rationale for the books selected, supplementary resources, and general ideas on mathematics and children's literature. The first seven chapters present activities organized according to the following themes: (1) providing a context; (2) introducing manipulatives; (3) modeling a creative experience; (4) posing an interesting problem; (5) preparing for a concept or skill; (6) developing a concept or skill; and (7) providing a context for review. Each chapter begins with a discussion of the theme and presents activities involving stories that exemplify the themes. Each activity provides the author and publication year of the story, a summary of the story, a classroom sketch of the activity, appropriate grade levels, and possible follow-up activities. Worksheets related to particular activities are included at the end of each chapter. The eighth chapter examines ways in which mathematical thinking can be applied in the classroom experience of children's literature in general. A list of 20 books for teachers and a list of 81 books for children are provided. (MDH)
