Description

This volume contains the edited proceedings of the Tenth International Symposium on Parkinson's Disease, and provides a comprehensive account of the latest advances worldwide in the study and treatment of parkinsonian syndromes. With contributions from more than 400 leading international authorities, the book presents an overview of the wide spectrum of current basic and clinical research and therapy - from studies using the most advanced neurochemical and molecular biological techniques, to new insights into the clinical picture of the parkinsonian patient and recent breakthroughs in drug therapy and tissue transplant surgery.
Coverage includes neuroanatomical, neurophysiological, neurochemical, neuropharmacological, and molecular biological studies on the dynamics of the basal ganglia in movement disorders and on the neuronal degenerative process in Parkinson's disease. Close attention is given to the role of monoamine oxidase-B (MAO-B), hydroxyl and superoxide radicals, iron, and MPTP-like neurotoxins in the etiology of Parkinson's disease, as well as to new findings on the genetics of the disease. Noted experts describe the clinical physiology of motor disorders and discuss cognitive dysfunction and dementia in Parkinson's disease. Conditions such as juvenile parkinsonism, heredity progressive dystonia, and dopa-responsive dystonia are also intensively discussed as purely dopaminergic disorders. Other contributors describe applications of MRI, PET, and SPECT in clinical research on parkinsonism and dystonic disorders and analyze neuropathological findings in Parkinson's disease and symptomatic parkinsonism.
The section on drug therapy includes extensive clinical data on new Sinemet formulations, apomorphine and lisuride infusion, MAO-B inhibitors, and L-threo-DOPS, as well as promising suggestions for future treatment strategies. Full consideration is given to the factors affecting response to drug treatment and management of side effects such as drug induced dyskinesia or psychosis. The book also includes detailed reports on the techniques and clinical outcome of fetal mesencephalic tissue transplantation.
This volume is an indispensable reference for all neurologists, neurosurgeons, and neuroscientists, as well as for pharmacologists developing new therapeutic agents for parkinsonism and other neurodegenerative diseases.
