Description

"In La France de Profil Paul Strand's photographs and commentary by French author Claude Roy combine to capture the essence of rural life in postwar France. Now available for the first time in English, this long-lost classic, like Strand's renowned books Time in New England and Un Paese, is a profound meditation on place. The original French-language edition of this book, published in 1952 in Switzerland, was conceived by Strand and Roy as a "family album"--A means of exploring a time and a people through photographs and writing. Strand's portraits of the old and young evoke a sense of their character and history. The images of the narrow alleys, old tabacs, sidewalk cafes, and fields convey the texture and rhythm of the French countryside. Claude Roy's text collages include selections of classic French poetry, traditional recipes, folksongs and other vernacular writings, in addition to his own poems and witty commentary on what it means to be French. As he writes: "For almost all Frenchmen, being French is the only vocation they cannot actually choose: it is in the air that penetrates the lungs of a newborn baby ... In that first moment, the job has already begun. There you are - without having asked for it - pledged to red wine rather than tea, sake, beer ..." In 1950, Strand left the United States for France, where he hoped to experience and document the life of a pastoral French village. "I liked the idea of being confined to a small place and then having to dig into its smallness," he wrote. La France de Profil is not only a tribute to a way of life all but forgotten, but also a monument to the evocative power of skillfully synthesized pictures and text - and to the depth and virtuosity of Paul Strand's photographic vision." -- Book jacket.
