Description

This volume is the result of an October, 1997 gathering of the Lawyers Committee for Human Rights, which brought together scholars and activists with a diversity of viewpoints to debate the right to equality before the law. The intention was not to provide answers about Islam and equality, rather the intention is to present a snapshot of a debate that is taking place throughout the world about how to reconcile Islamic law and international human right standards. While many religious leaders do not see public sphere rights as incompatible with their religious convictions, the right to equality between men and women in the private sphere is problematic. This right has implications for the place of woman in the family as well as for the rights of the woman as a citizen.
