This fully illustrated multi-author exhibition catalogue introduces an inspiring collection of photography to scholars and the public. There was a whole collection made mines the Estate of Lester and Betty Guttman's 2014 gift of 830 photographic works by 414 artists to the Smart Museum of Art. Over thirty years, the Guttmans amassed an expansive collection of great photographs that span the very earliest days of the medium to the near-present day. The publication includes an introduction to the Guttmans and the collection from the curators, Laura Letinsky and Jessica Moss; essays by Carol Ehlers, Carl Fuldner, Joy Jeehye Kim, Carmen Merport, and Leslie Wilson; an illustrated timeline; and one hundred plates interspersed throughout with personal reflections and interpretations from diverse artists and scholars, including Dawoud Bey, Richard Born, Heiji Choy Black, Romi Crawford, Stephen Daiter, Mitch Epstein, Hanne Graversen, Maud Lavin, Laura Letinksy, Arthur Lubow, Michael Rossi, Britt Salvesen, Jennifer Scappettone, Catherine Sullivan, Emily Teeter, Michael Tymkiw, and Elena Zinchenko.
