Classed as historical fiction due to its narrative style, this book chronicles the combat missions flown by Captain John Quinn West, Jr., a first pilot and aircraft commander in the 397th Bomb Group, 9th United States Air Force, from 1943-1944. West commanded the medium bomber By-Golly, a B-26 Martin Marauder, stationed in Rivenhall, England. West and his crew flew the By-Golly in 40 missions over France and Germany in an attempt to cut Nazi supply lines before and after D-Day. The narrative is based on events that actually occurred, and it is West's story as much as it is the story of the regiment and of the B-24 Marauder, the By-Golly. Pictures of the actual crews and their planes are shown throughout the piece.
