Description

William Alwyn is a prolific composer, whose works include symphonies, chamber music, film scores, opera and art songs. The cycle of songs Mirages is not widely known and is set to poetry of his own creation. These songs offer insight into the artistry of Alwyn enlivening his romantic style during the mature years of his compositional output. This research paper focuses on an analysis of integral poetic and musical elements contained in each of the six songs. Musical motives are examined in detail as their use within the texture is fundamental to the nature of the work. The relationship of text and music is studied, with the cycle's imagery discussed in detail.
