Excerpt from Faith, Fairs, and Festivals of India In this little volume I have attempted to bring together the leading features of the principal Indian religions, to describe some of the chief ceremonies and festivals, and, in the last chapter, to give a few notes on the management of a large religious fair. I do not profess to have written much which is original, and this little book may be regarded as a simple summary composed from the works of many learned authors. I trust that my effort will provide a useful work of reference and enable some of my fellow-countrymen, who have not time or inclination to study what is regarded, by many perhaps, as a dry and complex subject, to gain a slight idea of the religious views held by millions of British subjects in India and thus to sympathize with and comprehend them better.
