Bret Harte worked at many jobs throughout his lifetime -- miner, teacher, messenger, and journalist. In 1868 he turned to editing "The Overland Monthly" and the publication of his story, "The Luck of Roaring Camp," in the magazine's second edition earned him national acclaim.
