After a treacherous year-long journey to reach New Mexico, Latour finds some of the Mexican religious leaders less than welcoming. Willa Cather was inspired to write Death Comes for the Archbishop by the life of Archbishop Jean-Baptiste Lamy who established the Saint Francis Cathedral in New Mexico between 1869 and 1886.
