This is the story of how a 15-year-old West Texas boy helplessly watches as his parents are gunned down at their ranch in 1865 by wandering bandits. The young man and his older brother are forced to spend the rest of his teen years on an uncle's ranch. But the young teen has vowed to avenge his parents murder. He learns riding and shooting skills on his uncle's ranch and when he reaches age 19 he sets out to find the killers. His odyssey takes him over much of Texas, Indian Territory and Kansas as he chases the killers -- Snake Slade and Texas Tom Miller. His brother gave him a silver-plated pistol and his gun becomes his trademark as he deals with gunslingers along the way. He becomes famous as The Quicksilver Kid. His journeys see him endure dangers on a Chisholm Trail cattle drive, endure harsh treatment as a captive of Indians. He spends years in his quest, meeting some historical Old West figures along the way. He partners with a young black man who is out to get revenge for the murder of his family by the Ku Klux Klan. He falls in love with a young woman and that helps drive his efforts. This is a unique Western saga in that it incorporates realism into the fabric of the story. Real people, real time periods, real towns, real trail bosses, real events, real saloons, real hotels, real newspapers. Western legends such as Wild Bill Hickok, Belle Star, Bear River Smith, Ben Thompson, Doc Holliday, etc., become integral parts of the story. The surprise ending is somewhat startling.
