Description

"When you hear hoof beats, think horses not zebras." This axiom is heard by doctors throughout their medical training. Look for the most common, and therefore most likely, causes of symptoms in a patient. It is a practical and useful paradigm to use in evaluating patients. But, as a patient, what if you believe that you are a zebra? What if your doctor will only look for horses? Zebra: A Patient's Guide to Cushing's Disease was written by a Cushing's patient to help guide new and suspected zebra's through the often difficult process of diagnosis. If you have unexplained weight gain, central obesity, a buffalo hump, thin skin, easy bruising, excess facial hair, high blood pressure, insomnia, weakness, and/or fatigue, your symptoms could be explained by a multitude of common ailments. Or they may all point to Cushing's disease. Many patients with Cushing's disease find themselves brushed aside by their doctors and told to simply "diet and exercise." They are told that Cushing's is too rare of a disorder to consider. The goal of this short book is to empower patients who think they may suffer from Cushing's disease. You will learn: -the signs and symptoms of Cushing's disease -how to find a good doctor -what tests to request -how to handle doubt -how to work towards a cure Please note: The author, Ann Nicola, is not a doctor. Advice given in this book are not a substitute for medical advice from a medical professional. It is intended only as a guide to help other weary zebras. Zebra is approximately 11,000 words in length.
