Description

Reviewers have written that IMMORTAL is "A gripping supernatural thriller," "fast-paced," "tightly plotted," "epic scale horror," "a joy," "so easy to pick up and so hard to put down!" and have compared this title favorably with titles by Stephen King and Peter Straub A future world parallel to our own is ruled by two souls trapped in one body, a powerful geneticist/demon named Apep. Apep feeds on the life force of those who inhabit this world to keep himself alive. Yet despite his genetic genius and mystical powers, he is dying. To make himself immortal, he embarks on a plan which threatens the existence of our world. Apep?s plan involves a series of brutal murders on our world which seem to have been committed by an inhuman beast. In the midst of these murders Jeremy Wheeler, a middle aged Psychologist, finds his early morning walk interrupted by an odd gnome-like man who identifies himself as Conrad LuPone. Conrad tells Jeremy that Jeremy is the link between his world and that of Apep. Conrad insists Jeremy is the single cohesive element who will either enable or prevent Apep?s plan from succeeding and determine the ultimate fate of this evil. Skeptical, it takes a series of strange events to convince Jeremy the gnomish man is right. Jeremy prepares for battle and, accompanied by Hank Davison, the local sheriff ? who had his own encounter with the extraordinary ? steps through a portal to Apep?s world. Jeremy meets a variety of interesting characters on his journey, and joins with an Engineer, Lori Hellman, and a boy, Mark Scott, who are also from his world, to assault Apep?s palace. "...an intriguing and suspenseful read. In the tradition of Stephen King and Peter Straub, who mix the supernatural and science fiction genres, Immortal tells of a man who takes revenge on a serial killer and, as a result, lets loose an evil that he must then attempt to conquer by traveling through time." Kate Templeton Fox for the OHIOANA QUARTERLY, the journal for the Ohioana Library Association. "A gripping supernatural thriller, IMMORTAL belongs to that class of horror fantasy that is so easy to pick up and so hard to put down!" Midwest Book Review. "Jeremy?s adventures combine the qualities of Outward Bound and Alice in Wonderland, with sufficient death and destruction to satisfy most Stephen King fans."--Craig Wilson Special to the Akron Beacon Journal, Book Talk column. "With fast-paced, compact scenes and dialog that moves the story in at a constant high-speed pace, makes Immortal the kind of book that is difficult to put down. After reading it, the images, and perhaps the nightmares, linger. Davidson has written a tightly plotted horror novel that deserves some attention. I will be looking for more work by this talented writer." -- Phillip Tomasso III for BookBrowser. "Despite Stephen King opening wide the door, few authors have given a good stab at doing epic scale horror. D. E. Davidson picks up the challenge, finding inspiration in King?s Dark Tower series, Straub?s Shadowland and both authors? The Talisman. The influences are very obvious, but Davidson has crafted an original enough concept for his novel to stand or fall on its own merits. My take is it stands... "Davidson handles his plotting well, serving up surprises that really surprise. His action sequences are exciting and frequent. The real world town of Prattville, Ohio is lovingly rendered and his characters are likable and believably flawed individuals facing extraordinary circumstances. The plot is complex, and so is the structure. Davidson?s skill in knowing when to show a glimpse of his cards and when to keep them hidden is remarkable. Both his story and his characters show a great deal of depth and intelligence. Even better, he avoids episodic battles that don?t advance his plot, a pandemic problem with epic quest fantasies. Nothing is thrown in for a quick thrill; every scene moves the story toward the final confrontation between good and evil. It?s always a joy to find a debut novel by an author who sets high goals and for the most part achieves them. I found that kind of joy in Immortal: A Linking of Souls."-- Garrett Peck, HELLNOTES NEWSLETTER review. (The Hellnotes Bookstore 27780 Donkey Mine Road, Oak Run, CA 96069) ?Here?s an apocalyptic dark fantasy work that has hints of King, Koontz, Straub and more. More than once while reading it I made a comparison to The Stand and The Dark Tower series, both by Stephen King (The Stand is one of my all time favorites).?-- Lynn Nicole Louis, SFReader. "IMMORTAL: A Linking of Souls is an intricate, thoroughly ambitious trip into that ever-changing labyrinth of life, afterlife and pre-life experienced by all people -- whether they?re cognizant of the journey or not. ?Fast-paced, yet erudite, this novel successfully straddles the boundaries of horror and metaphysical science fiction, with a strong emphasis on behavioral ethics and the role fate plays in all of our lives. ?The use of descriptive detail and characterization throughout is excellent. ?While it isn?t your average horror novel, it should satisfy fans of King, Straub and Koontz, as well as intrigue fans of cross-genre works." -- A. R. Morlan, author of THE AMULET and DARK JOURNEY (Bantam Books) and hundreds of short stories, articles and etc. ? ? ? About IMMORTAL J. N. Williamson, author/editor of 44+ published novels and books including HOW TO WRITE TALES OF HORROR, FANTASY & SCIENCE FICTION writes,"...I believe your book (IMMORTAL) depicts signs of brilliance in two principle areas: the clarity of each scene, especially those that are shockingly horrific, and the general flow of the work, each scene and section following one another in inevitable but unexpected sequence. ?Rather little is usually said about what I term ?flow? in a novel but I think it?s one of the semi-secret reasons why certain novels stand out from others coming out at the same time...." ? ? ? "IMMORTAL: A Linking of Souls mercilessly peals back the thin veil covering our comfortable conceptions of Time and Reality to reveal a chilling glimpse of a relentless evil lying in wait behind and beyond all things, a grand achievement in dark fantasy, horror, and heroic story telling!" -- C. Dean Andersson, author of The Bloodsong Saga series, I AM DRACULA and many other novels. ? ? ? Greg F. Gifune, editor at Thevin? Kitty Publications says, "With IMMORTAL, D. E. Davidson has created a suspenseful and entertaining read, but also a horor novel of unusual depth and intelligence. A provocative page-turner from a highly skilled author. Not to be missed." ? ? ? ?Award winning author Brian A. Hopkins says, "With IMMORTAL, D. E. Davidson takes his place among the new pack of horrormongers, but proves himself a step or two ahead of most, with finely-crafted writing skills honed by years as the superb editor of NIGHT TERRORS." ? ? ? ?Author and poet, Sandra DeLuca says "IMMORTAL is stunning. D. E. Davidson?s talent shines within this novel. His writing is sheer perfection. His words possess power and sheer brilliance. He has proven that he is a master within the horror genre." ? ? ? Reader, Natalie Oakley in Melbourne, Australia wrote, "I?ve just finished with IMMORTAL, and I must say - it was brilliant.... I enjoyed your plot. I found it very hard to anticipate, which is wonderful. I felt for your characters. I could visualize your descriptions.... Well done, I really enjoyed it." ? ? ? ?Khaled Hosseini wrote, "A really, really engaging piece of fiction....I was somewhat awestruck by the breadth and the scope of the task you had undertaken....Clearly, this was NOT a straight forward story to tell....Through it all, I did not detect a single false note. Your characters are so well drawn, I really did not want to leave them at the end...." ? ? ? ?About IMMORTAL author James S. Dorr wrote, "...the
