Before television escaped Philo Farnsworth's laboratory and entered into people's homes, Americans had to go to the movie theaters to see the news of the world flash before their eyes in the form of the newsreels. During their heyday, over 16,000 theaters nation-wide showed ten minute newsreels to nearly eighty million patrons each week with a new reel released twice a week. Some of the cameramen who shot the newsreels were minor celebrities. Others worked in relative anonymity telling the stories of others on film.
