Description

During the 1955-1959 armed struggle of Cypriots for independence from the British Colonial Rule, Orestes, the young head of the village guerrilla group is arrested and tortured by the British Intelligence Service. Patroclos, a member of EOKA, the secret fighters' organization, receives a message from his local area commander which shocks him. He is informed that his elder brother Stavros, is suspected of being the informer, because he was seen visiting the local police station, and he may be executed as a traitor. Patroclos would never believe that his brother might be a traitor, but he cannot prove anything about his innocence. When Patroclos talks to Stavros about the suspicion, he discloses to Patroclos how in the police station he has come face-to-face with a hooded man, certainly a collaborator with the British authorities, who is missing several fingers on one hand. Patroclos draws up a list of persons with missing fingers as possible suspects, including bookseller Argyris Mamonides, who is one of the local group's most trusted associates. No one has had any reason to doubt his loyalty. He also happens to be the father of Stavros' first and only true love, Elpida, who was sent abroad to Africa by her father against her will, preventing her marriage with Stavros. By chance Patroclos is informed that Mamonides has secret close ties with the feared Lynton, the Intelligence Service cruel torturer of arrested fighters, and he plays a double role. The local area commander is reluctant to believe that, but finally he sets a trap to test him. He gives only to Mamonides a false information that a secret high rank meeting of guerrillas will take place in a ruin outside the village. Mamonides passes the information to Lynton, who organizes an ambush to arrest and kill the 'terrorists'. Instead, the British soldiers fall in an ambush by EOKA fighters and most of them are killed. Lynton becomes furious, he things that he has been trapped by Mamonides and he shoots him dead on the spot. Patroclos is shocked by the strange things that come to light: the truth about the traitor....... but especially about his brother. The amazing real truth about the traitor, about Stavros and his love of Elpida is revealed in the last part of of the book!
