In response to the changing demographics of the U.S. population, in 1997 the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) issued new standards for collecting data on race and Hispanic or Latino origin (12). Most notably, these new standards allow respondents to the census and federal surveys to indicate more than one race group in answering questions on race.
