It was an extravagant celebration that night at the St. Regis hotel in Washington D.C. Bottles of Dom Pérignon champagne were being popped, and congratulations of high praises and honors were being given to me and my partner, Dr. Larry Pratt, for the discovery of a drug that could restore the health and minds of patients with Alzheimer’s. It was a night that no one was ever going to forget. I left the ballroom at around ten O’clock. As I walked to the elevator, I noticed the lobby was filled with people and laughter. I was going to my room to finally get a good night’s sleep. As I stood at the elevator door, waiting for it to open, I suddenly felt a strange sensation of danger closing in on me. That’s when it happened—something bumped into me. No, it wasn’t just something. It was more like an animal in heat. She came out of nowhere, and trust me, I would have noticed her anywhere. As she brushed her body past me, she whispered something in my ear. I wasn’t sure what she said, but somehow her breathless voice made my knees go weak. I turned to look at her through the crowd. She glanced back over her shoulder at me, our eyes met, and I suddenly felt sexually aroused. An alarm went off inside my head, and all my senses went into overdrive. As I stood there, watching in slow motion, her hips shifted from side to side. Her red backless dress shimmering in the light, she disappeared into the cocktail lounge. I could hear the piano playing. That’s when I looked at my watch and decided that I wasn’t so tired after all. I followed her inside and sat at the bar and ordered a brandy. I wondered if she was waiting for someone—maybe her boyfriend, her lover, who knows—but for obvious reasons, I didn’t think it was her husband she was waiting for. She looked beautiful in the candlelight. Her lips were full and sensuous, her eyes mesmerizing. She crossed her long legs, and the slit up the side of her dress parted, showing me just a hint of her thigh. She looked directly at me and smiled. It took everything I had to remember I was still married—or was I? My temperature was rising. I couldn’t take my eyes off her. I was like a moth being drawn to the flame. This was for real, and it was more dangerous than I could have ever imagined. She was irresistible, and like the sweet, sharp edge of obsession, I had to have her.
