The story begins in 1881, when Dr. Watson, having returned to London from Afghanistan, meets Holmes in a laboratory. Holmes shakes Watson's hand and comments, "You have been in Afghanistan, I perceive?" Watson is astounded by Holmes' ability to notice details and assemble them. Holmes reads the telegram requesting consultation in a fresh murder case. Holmes observes the crime scene, using a magnifying lens and above his body was written "RACHE." There were two more murders in similar nature. Holmes successfully found the murderer and narrated sequentially about the crimes. After this, Holmes and Watson return to Baker Street. Holmes then shows Watson the newspaper that officers Lestrade and Gregson are given full credit for the inquiry.
