His slang language/accent was irritating. He left his wife routinely without telling her where he was for many days. He was the main character and I disliked him immensely. The setting is the Southern California desert during the prohibition era. He willingly got involved with moonshiners and transporting booze - but lucked out in the end by helping the authorities
