The Big Guys is a coming of age story which takes place during the summer of 1969, in The Bronx and Wallkill, New York. On the last day of his high school career, Salvatore Porcelli has just turned 18 and is set to enjoy a night of celebration with his girlfriend in their favorite location in Pelham Bay Park. A series of events turn the night into anything but a celebration and set Sal on a course that brings him closer to his roots and closer to the father with whom he was always at odds. The story is built upon the events recounted in the autobiography of Carlo Porco, the author's father, which have been cleverly woven into the narrative, bringing the reader back to early 20th century life in a small, Southern Italian village. The tales told by the author and his father, capture life and all it's joys and sorrows, in their respective time periods.
