Description

Edward Bellamy's classic look at the future has been translated into over twenty languages and is the most widely read novel of its time. A young Boston gentleman is mysteriously transported from the nineteenth to the twenty-first century -- from a world of war and want to one of peace and plenty. This brilliant vision became the blueprint of utopia that stimulated some of the greatest thinkers of our age. With Foreword by Sandra Thomas-Comenole: UTOPIAN IDEALS IN CITY PLANNING: Looking Backward On Garden Cities and La ConfluenceThe saying, "If you build it, they will come," doesn't always hold true for cities built on utopian ideals. In this essay, I consider the meaning and purpose of utopia in literature by analyzing the influential utopian novel Looking Backward. Further, I discuss the resounding effects of utopian ideals on society and city planning, specifically with regards to inequality, sustainability and community. To do this I compare the Garden City Movement to the new La Confluence urban regeneration project in Lyon, France.
