The Reef, a story of three Americans living abroad, may hold more clues to Edith Whartons relationship with Morton Fullerton than any other of her fictive works. Young widow Anna Leith comes from Old New York society and has moved to France with her daughter and stepson. While visiting London, Anna encounters George Darrow, a man whom she once loved. Anna finds seeing Darrow again to be both disturbing and exhilarating. Darrow proposes, but she puts him off. While waiting on Anna to make a decision, Darrow meets a young working class woman in Paris named Sophy Viner and has a meaningless (to him) tryst with her without considering the consequences of such an act. Weeks later, arriving at Annas French country villa, he finds Sophy to be employed as governess to Annas daughter and engaged to Annas stepson. In The Reef, Wharton explores relationships beyond the constraints of class, delving into ideas of trust, love and how the past can inform the future.
