Known to miners and laborers around the country as Mother Jones, Mary Harris Jones was once described as the "most dangerous woman in America." She earned this reputation through her dedication to the labor movement and her willingness to go to jail to stand up for her beliefs. Born in Ireland, Mary Harris came to North America with her family to escape the potato famine ravaging their native land. Educated in Canada, she moved to America, where she married George Jones in 1861. Six years later, George and all four of their children were killed by an epidemic of yellow fever. After the Chicago Fire of 1871 destroyed her dress shop there, Jones dedicated her life to fighting for workers' rights. For sixty years, she traveled across America, organizing coal miners in Colorado, seamstresses in New York, and railway workers in Illinois. Mother Jones rarely backed down from a fight. This new biography retells the story of one of the most colorful figures in American history. Book jacket.
