Description

Pursuing Happiness is a novel about Agnes, who expects to create a great American Dream. She develops her expectations from experiences of having greater opportunity owing to newfound wealth. She takes for granted that everyone wants to do the right thing, if the opportunity is presented. She embarks on a plan of educating herself until she feels qualified. Agnes plans to create a life that provides the greatest safety for children. She doesn’t want her children to be rejected like she was. She finds the barriers are bias, prejudice, jealousy, apathy and rejection. Agnes develops perspectives about the barriers and concludes that ninety percent of the problem is repudiation. After the suicide of Agnes’ husband, she engages a friend named Charles to further challenge her insight into the good-life, fast-lane lifestyle. She expects Charles to contribute to her evolving ideas of what is really the best and how to access it. Agnes also befriends a younger woman whom she intends to model in her own image. Agnes’ plan to reach a place that would signal her to have her family didn’t seem to come until she suffered hospitalization for depression. Her time in the hospital shaped her resolve to resurrect her plan to have a family. Agnes succeeds by reaching a level that will enable her to matter in the ways she and her husband had planned.
