Merv Lincoln, Brenda McKenna

Description

Merv Lincoln was a 22 year old university graduate with a teaching career when, in the 1950s, he became an internationally famous runner, an Olympian and the second Australian to run the mile in under four minutes, on home and soil. The product of a time when men dreamed their sons would earn their way out of rural poverty by excelling at sport, and, mother's envisaged education as a son's pathway to a better life, Merv might have been an unlikely candidate to fulfil such hopes and dreams but for a unique need he had to succeed through challenges. Dogged throughout early childhood by bouts of serious illness, this need of his, and, the timely intervention of an aunt, assisting his education prospects, saw him achieve success after success, often hard won, in a career-wide world, opening before him. Moving seamlessly from an athletic youth to become an economist, consultant to Government and business sector and also a University lecturer, Merv simultaneously developed a Media career. Graduating at age 50 with a Doctorate of Philosophy, Merv Lincoln or Dr. Mervyn Lincoln as he was now known, left teaching to begin a business; consulting and marketing to the investment sector, computer software he developed from his thesis. When, turning 70, his health broke down this remarkable achiever embarked on his final challenge, to record this, his life story.
