An engine is a device which can be used to convert one form of energy into mechanical energy. Automotive engines are those which can be used for propelling an automobile. According to the energy conversion method, they are broadly classified into heat engines, electric motors and physically powered motors. Heat engines are thermodynamic systems which can convert thermal energy of fuel into mechanical energy. They are further categorized into internal combustion engine, external combustion engine and air breathing combustion engine. Ramjet, pulse jet, scramjet, gas turbines, steam turbines and reciprocating engines are some of its prominent examples.
