Las aproximaciones a la problemática del DIEyM (Diseño de Interiores, Equipamiento y Mobiliario) pueden organizarse en dos grandes tendencias: la tendencia en Europa consistente en conservar los edificios existentes, dado que están protegidos por ley en condición de "valor patrimonial"; y la tendencia del norte del Continente Americano, en donde prevalecen las referencias a la relación que se establece entre diseñadores de interiores y mobiliario, con distintos profesionales, durante el proyecto de nuevos edificios. Ninguno de los dos casos se adapta a la situación con la cual convivimos, en los países de Latinoamérica, los arquitectos y diseñadores de interiores y mobiliario. Sin lugar a dudas, las experiencias latinoamericanas difieren de una región a otra, siendo una tarea pendiente el teorizar sobre cada una ellas. Y la manera de comenzar a realizar teoría es definiendo nosotros mismos conceptos básicos de esta práctica con el fin de crear bases sólidas desde las cuales llevar a cabo una actividad crítica en este ámbito de la arquitectura. Esta tarea es la que se aquí se propone comenzar a realizar.
