Goldilocks and the Three Bears is a nineteenth-century fairy tale, first written in 1837 by Robert Southey, an English poet. I have rewritten it with an updated twist and have penned it in rhyme to add to the pleasure of this cute little story of a brazen little girl who headed out through the woods, off the beaten path, in search of an adventure. Let me tell you about Goldilocks, this little girl did roam Deep in the woods, off the beaten path, a bit too far from home She set out on an adventure with no plan from the start Then broke some rules and went too far, which wasn't very smart She headed to the Bears domain and once it was in sight She helped herself to everything, though she knew it wasn't right Eventually the Bears returned I wouldn't want to be her A total stranger in their home, what will happen when they see her?

Some picture books are much too hard. Some picture books are much too soft. But James Marshall's Goldilocks is just right. This is Goldilocks as you've never seen her before! She is very definitely NOT sweet and innocent - oh no.
Three bears return home from a walk to find a little girl asleep in baby bear's bed.
Ignoring her parents' warning, a curious little girl gets lost in the forest and enters the home of three bears while they are taking a walk and helps herself to their belongings.
In this variation on the classic folktale, a rhyming, rope-skipping little girl rudely helps herself to the belongings of a genteel family of bears.
